FAQ
From 1 January 2027, the nursing assistant training programme in Saxony will replace the nursing aide training programme. This means that, for the first time, the profession will be regulated uniformly across Germany and will have a generalist focus: with your qualification, you will be able to work in any federal state.
On a full-time basis, the training programme lasts 18 months and comprises 1,050 hours of theory and 1,280 hours of practical training. It is organised on a dual-track basis: cooperation agreements between the school, the provider of the practical training and the training organisations set out the binding framework for the programme.
You will need:
- A secondary school leaving certificate, an equivalent qualification or successfully completed vocational training
- German language skills at B2 level or above
- Good health (medical certificate)
- An extended criminal record check as proof of your reliability
- Ability to work in a team, good communication skills and emotional resilience.
The Nursing Assistant Act, which was passed by the Bundestag on 9 October 2025, introduces, for the first time, a statutory training allowance for all trainees. You will receive this via your training provider; it is often based on collective agreement provisions and may vary depending on the provider.
