FAQ
From 1 January 2027, the role of nursing assistant will be introduced as a new, standardised nursing profession across Germany. It replaces the previous role of nursing aide in Bavaria and similar training programmes in other federal states, which previously varied from place to place. Once you have completed your qualification, you will be able to work throughout Germany, not just in Bavaria.
The full-time training programme lasts 18 months and comprises at least 1,050 hours of theory and 1,280 hours of practical training. It is organised on a dual-track basis and is facilitated by agreements between the nursing college, the organisation responsible for practical training and the placement organisations.
You will need:
- A secondary school leaving certificate, an equivalent qualification or successfully completed vocational training
- German language skills at B2 level or above
- Good health (medical certificate)
- Extended criminal record check
- Good communication skills and the ability to cope with emotional stress
In the Skills Lab, you’ll find nursing beds, manikins with heartbeats and breathing, as well as equipment such as blood pressure monitors and dressing materials. Tutors control the manikins from the control room. This allows you to practise procedures such as changing dressings or repositioning patients before carrying them out on real patients.
After completing your nursing assistant training: your career options in the care sector
Once you’ve qualified, you’ll be able to take on a wide range of roles in the care sector. This role offers an independent entry point into the care sector and, at the same time, serves as a stepping stone towards greater career progression should you wish to develop further later on:
- Direct entryinto the profession in a hospital, residential long-term care or community care
- A qualification recognised nationwide
- Transition to the three-year training programme to become a registered nurse, with credit given for work already completed
- Further training for additional qualifications
