Job profile

Training as a social assistant lays the foundation for all care and social professions. In this basic training programme, you will learn to work responsibly with children, young people, people with disabilities and people in need of care. This includes supporting activities in the areas of education and care, but also in housekeeping and leisure activities. You will not only learn what needs people have at different stages of their lives, but also how to deal with them professionally and support them.

Career prospects

As your field of work involves working with children, young people, people with disabilities and people in need of care, you can work in various socio-educational and care facilities such as daycare centres, after-school care centres, hospitals, nursing homes for the elderly, outpatient care services and residential homes.

After completing your training as a social assistant, you will have the entry requirements to complete a specialised technical college training course as an educator or curative educator with us immediately afterwards.

Admission requirements

To do this job well, you should enjoy working with people, have a sense of responsibility and be enthusiastic. You should also be empathetic and creative.

Further formal requirements for the apprenticeship are

  • For the two-year apprenticeship: Secondary school certificate or equivalent qualification
  • For the one-year apprenticeship: University or technical college entrance qualification

Training structure

The theoretical training in social assistance is based on the learning field concept and takes place at the vocational college. In addition, there are various compulsory and elective internships in child and youth welfare, disability care and care facilities, so that you can specialise in one field during your training.

Compulsory elective area:

  • Use media and materials on a topic from a selected field of work

Practical vocational training (two-year training programme)

  • Compulsory internship 1st year of training: 2 x five weeks
  • Compulsory internship 2nd year of training: 1 x five weeks
  • Compulsory elective internship 2nd year of training: 1 x five weeks

Practical vocational training (one-year training programme)

  • Compulsory internship: 9 weeks in three areas
  • Compulsory elective work placement: 3 weeks

Education voucher

Funding via education voucher from the employment agency or job centre (according to SGB II or III), but also possible via pension insurance providers and BFD.
