Frequently Asked Questions
Depending on your qualifications, the Munich teacher training programme lasts three to four years. Those who have a (specialised) A-level qualification or have completed at least two years of vocational training in the social or health sector can complete the programme in three years.
Without these requirements, the introductory year in social pedagogy (SEJ) must usually be completed first.
In the final year of training (3rd or 4th year), there is a one-year professional internship with accompanying theory phases. The training concludes with a state examination.
You need at least a secondary school leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss) or a comparable or higher educational qualification. To start with a (specialised) A-level, a 200-hour internship in a social education institution is required. Alternatively, it is also possible to start with a secondary school leaving certificate and at least two years of completed vocational training. In addition, social skills, empathy and a willingness to reflect are important personal requirements for this profession.
In the traditional school-based training programme, you will not receive any remuneration during the first two theoretical years, as this is a technical college programme. However, in the third year, the professional internship, you will receive remuneration based on the collective agreement for interns in the public sector (TVPöD). Since 1 May 2024, this has amounted to approximately £1,802 gross per month.
For the school-based training years, you can apply for funding options such as Aufstiegs-BAföG (up to £800 per month, repayable), BAföG or education vouchers. Seek individual advice on which funding options are available to you.
The job market for state-certified nursery school teachers in Munich and the surrounding region is very good. Since 2013, there has been a legal right to childcare for children aged one and above, which keeps the demand for qualified professionals consistently high. Many Heimerer trainees receive concrete job offers during their first internship. The starting salary for educators at Munich employers (e.g. in daycare centres) is often over £4,000 gross per month.
Absolutely. Anyone who meets the academic admission requirements and is in good health can also start the Munich educator training programme as a career changer. Under certain conditions, subsidised retraining is also possible. Life experience and previous professional experience in other fields are often seen as an asset in social education work.
Yes. Upon completion of the technical academy (and an additional examination in English), you will obtain a subject-specific technical college entrance qualification. You will then be eligible to enrol in bachelor's degree programmes in areas such as early childhood education, social work, or childhood education and training. By taking an external mathematics course, it is also possible to obtain a general technical college entrance qualification.
Nursery nurses are the first level of qualification in early childhood education. They primarily provide support in the day-to-day care of children up to around six years of age. Educators have further pedagogical training and are responsible for the education, training and care of children and young people up to the age of 18 – in daycare centres, after-school care centres, youth facilities and other socio-educational fields. In Bavaria, educator training is usually based on childcare training or the introductory year in social pedagogy.
