Frequently asked questions
The course usually lasts two years. In Year 11, you alternate between classroom lessons and practical training at a healthcare or social care facility. In Year 12, lessons take place on a full-time basis. Those who have already completed relevant vocational training may, under certain conditions, join the course directly in Year 12 and obtain the vocational baccalaureate in one year.
To join Year 11, you need a secondary school leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss). If you wish to join Year 12 directly, you will also need to have completed at least two years of vocational training in a relevant field, such as healthcare or social care. If your training is not in a relevant field, additional work experience is usually required.
With a University of Applied Sciences entrance qualification, you are eligible to study at any university of applied sciences across Germany, regardless of the subject area. Thanks to the curriculum at the FOS, you will be particularly well prepared for degree programmes such as Social Work, Gerontology, Health and Social Management, Nursing, Special Educational Needs, Social Pedagogy or Health Sciences.
In addition to the general subjects of German, English, mathematics and biology, the FOS Health and Social Care programme also covers subject-specific content: health and social work. This combination prepares you for both university study and vocational training in the health or social care sector.
